The company "AGRICO" (Netherlands) systematically conducts long-term selection work in order to obtain varieties with high yields, attractive presentation, given quality and taste characteristics, high resistance to various diseases. Particular attention is paid to the breeding of varieties resistant to late blight. The result of this activity was the creation of a line of varieties united in the group “NEW GENERATION" (NEW GENERATION) with high resistance to late blight (9 points out of 9 possible for the resistance of tubers), allowing them to be cultivated without the use of pesticides in the organic farming system.
One of these varieties, ALUET, is currently presented on the Russian market.
Variety ALUET from the mid-early group (75-85 days or 6,5 points out of 9), red-tuberous. Included in the Register of the Russian Federation in 2018.
The resistance of the ALUET variety to late blight was confirmed by tests carried out by the All-Russian Research Institute of Phytopathology (VNIIF) in 2017 on the Ramenskaya Gorka experimental field (the journal "Potato protection" No. 1, 2018, article "Assessment of the resistance of the ALUET variety to late blight"). Resistance of ALUETA was estimated at 9 points out of 9 possible for tops (assessment in the field) - at the level of the reference variety Sapro Mira.

ALUET is a versatile variety: it can be used for the organic and traditional market (washing, packaging), it is suitable for making fries at home; characterized by a fairly high dry matter content (21%).
The high potential of the variety is fully realized, subject to the recommendations of the originator. For cultivation, light to medium soils are preferred, responsive to regular watering and nitrogen fertilization.
Features of agricultural technology
Germination / warming up
- It is recommended to pre-germinate the tubers after breaking off the apical shoots; in other cases, preliminary germination is not necessary - it is enough to subject the tubers to a temperature shock before planting; breaking off the side shoots more than once can cause a decrease in yield.
- It is not recommended to plant in cold soil (t less than +10 ° С).
Distance between tubers when planting for table purposes (row spacing 75 cm):
fraction of seed material 35/55 - about 27 cm (50 tubers / ha).
Distance between tubers when planting on seed targets (row spacing 75 cm):
fraction of seed material 35/55 - about 22 cm (60 tubers / ha).
fertilizers
For optimal plant development, there must be enough phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen in the soil.
Analysis for the content of phosphorus and potassium must be carried out in the previous season, by sampling soil from the arable layer (20-25 cm); determination of the presence of nitrogen - in the spring, before planting.
Phosphorus - normal doses
If the phosphorus content in the soil is normal (25-40 mg / kg of soil), the dose of application is calculated based on 120-180 kg of active ingredient per hectare.
If the phosphorus content is below the permissible value, then the application rate must be increased. If the content is higher, then the application rate is reduced (to a level of at least 100 kg a.i.). The potato plant has difficulty absorbing phosphorus from the soil, so the content of this element should be overestimated. When the phosphorus content is below 25 mg / kg of soil, it is necessary to add up to 250 kg of phosphorus according to the d.v. If the soil is heavy in texture, phosphorus should be applied in the fall. If the soil is light and plowing is planned in the spring, then the application of phosphorus should be carried out before plowing.
Potassium - introduction of an increased dose (+ 20% in comparison with other varieties)
If the potassium content in the soil is satisfactory, then the potassium application rate for seed potatoes is about 240 kg ai. (norm 200 kg), for table potatoes - 360 kg d.v. (norm 300 kg). On heavy soils, potash fertilizers can be applied in the fall. When applying potassium in the spring, before planting, it is necessary to be aware that potash fertilizers containing chlorine can harm potato plantings.
Nitrogen - application of an increased dose (+ 10% in comparison with other varieties)
For seed purposes –130 kg per day. (norm 120 kg a.i.).
For dining purposes - 160 kg d.v. (norm 145 kg a.i.).
The best time to apply nitrogen is before planting or after planting and before ridging is complete. Since the root system of potatoes is poorly developed, a one-time intake of large doses of nitrogen can damage the plant. When applying increased doses of nitrogen, it is better to divide the process into two parts: 65% of the norm - when planting, and the rest - three weeks after germination.
Reasons why seed potatoes require less nitrogen:
- lower nitrogen content accelerates tuber formation;
- a lower nitrogen content accelerates the growing season of the plant, thereby reducing the risk of viral diseases transmitted by aphids: by the time of the peak of aphid migration, the potato leaves become coarser, that is, less attractive to insects;
- lower nitrogen content contributes to better cleaning performance.
Balanced doses of mineral nutrition (especially nitrogen) contribute to:
- reducing the risk of excessive development of tops;
- the formation of a larger number of tubers;
- timely development of plants and maturation of tubers with a dense skin, suitable for mechanized harvesting;
- reducing the risk of damage to tubers by soil infections (fusarium, phomosis, soft rot, pithium) through damage to the peel due to its immaturity during mechanized harvesting;
- reduction of storage losses.
Metribuzin resistance
The variety is moderately resistant to metribuzin (6 out of 9); its use can lead to discoloration of the tops, but without reducing the yield.
Development of the tops
ALUET potatoes form a dense and powerful tops that remain viable almost until the end of the growing season; in view of the resistance to late blight, it is recommended to use two or three prophylactic treatments against Alternaria in the second half of the growing season, starting from the moment the tubers are laid.
Cleaning
It may take about 3 weeks after desiccation (mowing) of the tops to form a peel sufficient for mechanized harvesting; in order to avoid the development of watery wound rot (pithium), fusarium, soft rot, it is not recommended to harvest at a tuber pulp temperature above 21 °; The risk of the diseases mentioned above also increases when harvesting in dry conditions on heavy soils with a lot of soil clods.
Storage
Suitable for medium-term storage at a temperature of +5 ° С; in the case of storage of crops for the purpose of further industrial processing, the storage temperature is not lower than +7 ° C; to ensure the given keeping quality, a comparatively faster temperature decrease to the level of the main storage period is recommended in comparison with other varieties.
Comparative characteristics of the ALUET variety with the early-maturing EVOLUSHEN variety
In the line of varieties of the company "AGRICO" in the group of early and mid-season with a red color of the peel, presented on the Russian market, there are two varieties: early-maturing EVOLUSHEN and mid-early ALUET. The varieties are very similar to each other in appearance, but noticeably differ in cultivation technology.
The presence of both varieties in the plantings allows the grower to get a harvest of attractive deep-red tubers with a high marketability rate (80-90%), due to the earlier desiccation of tops in the EVOLUSHEN variety and later (in comparison with the EVOLUSHEN variety) in the ALUET variety.
- The foliage of the EVOLUSHEN variety remains viable almost until the end of the growing season, which often leads to the fact that the tubers outgrow the marketable size (as a rule, fraction 60/70 mm) in a few days. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out desiccation when about 70% of tubers have reached 55 mm in size: thus, for harvesting, the marketability indicator will be about 80-85%, and the presence of tubers with signs of sprouting will be minimal.
- The formation of tubers in the ALUET variety occurs at the end of the growing season, tubers generally reach a fraction of 55/70 mm, therefore, desiccation at a later stage contributes to a higher yield and an increase in the marketability of tubers.
