The Ministry of Agriculture of Bolivia, together with the National Institute for Forestry and Agricultural Research (INIAF), will support potato growers to compete with imported potatoes from Peru.
In particular, it is planned to increase the production of Jatun Puka, the cultivation of which is possible at an altitude of 3 m above sea level. This variety also exhibits high resistance to rot, fungal and viral diseases. The harvest of potatoes of this variety reaches 200 tons per 31 ha with a three-month growing period.
According to the agency, in 2018 at least 28,8 thousand tons of fresh potatoes, 3,8 thousand tons of frozen and 818 tons of chuno (a product from frozen dried tubers of dark color) and tuna (a light product similar to chuno were brought into the country , tubers for the preparation of which are pre-soaked in water). According to statistics from the Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade (IBCE), imports are estimated at $ 309,5 thousand.
