This week, the first batch of locally produced early carrots this season appeared on sale in the southern regions of Russia, according to analysts of the EastFruit project. According to the daily monitoring of the project, the sales season for early carrots in the farms of the Southern Federal District started on average a week later than usual. This was due to the fact that the heavy rains that were observed earlier in the region did not allow farmers to start harvesting.
At the moment, carrots of the new crop are offered in small batches at a price of 75-83 rubles / kg ($ 1,02-1,13 / kg). According to the producers themselves, more massively early carrots will go on sale early next month. Today, prices for early carrots in Russia are already 1,9 times more expensive on average than for the first batches of this root crop last year. For comparison, in 2020, the first lots of carrots of the new crop entered the market at 35-50 rubles / kg ($ 0,48-0,68 / kg).
Today, the main offer on the market is last year's carrots, and their prices continue to rise. So, at the moment, carrots of the 2020 harvest go on sale at 60-70 rubles / kg ($ 0,82-0,96 / kg). The key market players explain the next increase in selling prices in this segment by the increased demand for carrots, as well as by the low-volume supply in the market. Those producers who still have sufficient volumes of last year's carrots do not exclude further price growth. According to them, the price decline in the segment of carrots should be expected not earlier than mid-July, when the sale of new crop carrots will begin to arrive in large quantities.
