Glyphosate is still China's leading export product, although sales of herbicides have generally fallen.
Summary of the report “Analysis of the latest data on the import and export of pesticides in China and future trends” by ICAMA (Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China), presented at the seminar on the export of pesticides in China (CPEW 2019), organized by AGROPAGES.
1. Import and export of pesticides faces challenges, while exports of technical pesticides have increased at a faster rate than formulations
China's import and export of pesticides faced major challenges in the first half of 2019. Although the total value of imports and exports rose to a new high of US $ 4 billion, the growth rate of imports and exports of pesticides was only 473%, much lower than 2,4% in 8,3. Of this total, exports amounted to US $ 2018 billion, a 4,178% increase significantly below double-digit growth in previous years.
The ratio of exports of technical products to pesticide formulations shows the following changes, based on the table above.
From 2011 to 2017, the export of technical equipment for pesticides decreased from 63,2% to 56,3%, and the composition increased from 36,8% to 43,7%. Since 2018, exports of technical equipment for pesticides began to grow, exceeding 60%, while exports of formulations declined.
As for packaging, the export value of technical means and compositions of pesticides in industrial packaging in the first half of 2019 amounted to $ 3,169 billion, which is 2,1% more, while the export value of formulations in retail packaging amounted to $ 1,009 billion - an increase of 4% .
Although sales of products in retail packaging accounted for only about 25% of the total, sales of products in retail packaging were higher than in industrial packaging.
Pesticide Categories... Insecticide sales increased in both cost and quantity in the first half of 2019 - 14,5% and 20,8%, respectively.
Fungicides took the second place with 6,4%, and the export of plant growth regulators decreased by 27,6%.
Sales of various types of herbicides, which account for more than half of the total value of exports, fell from $ 2,265 billion last year to 2,163 billion this year, and exports fell from 520 300 tons to 508 800 tons, down 4,5% and 2,2 , XNUMX%, respectively.
2. Export to Latin America showed the highest growth: bifentrin, celodim, and chlorothalonil played an important role
Exports to Latin America, which is the second largest Chinese pesticide market, have grown significantly: exports totaled $ 1,223 billion, up 30,6% from the same period last year.
Africa imported the largest number of recipes.
Brazil, as the second largest pesticide export market from China, has been actively purchasing agrochemical products.
So, the cost of pesticides exported to Brazil increased from 397 million US dollars for the same period last year to 573 million dollars - that is, there was an increase of 44,2% increase.
Exports to Argentina ranked second, while exports to the United States (an important market for Chinese pesticides) fell 9,2%.
Exports to India increased by 11,8%, while exports to other Asian countries, such as Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, declined.
Asia is also the largest pesticide market. The export of pesticides in the first half of 2019 is estimated at $ 1,259 billion, which is 2,8% less compared to $ 1,295 billion in the same period of 2018, but still makes up 30% of the total export volume.
By active ingredients. According to data from the top 10 export pesticides, glyphosate is still China's main export product, followed by paraquat, although sales fell sharply, while bifentrin sales jumped sharply by 276,7% in the first half of 2019 compared to the same period last year. Relatively high sales growth was recorded in relation to celodime, emamectin and chlorothalonil.
3. Due to trade war between China and the USA, uncertainty in forecasts of pesticide exports has increased
Between 1978 and 2018, global sales of pesticides grew. A further increase is expected in 2019, due to global needs for food production.
In terms of Chinese exports of pesticides, the United States is still China's largest export market. However, the value of Chinese exports of pesticides to the United States in the first half of 2019 decreased by 9,2%.
The following chart shows a significant increase in Chinese exports of pesticides to the United States last year, 2018. A reduction in inventory could cause US exports to decline this year.
The Sino-US trade conflict in the first half of this year also affected the export of Chinese pesticides.
The Chinese pesticide industry plays an important role in the global supply structure, and demand for it remains in the United States. However, the tariff dispute between the two countries was not settled, which led to the uncertainty that affects the Chinese pesticide industry, as well as the more stringent environmental protection and labor safety rules adopted in the PRC.
ICAMA, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, is currently working on the implementation of appropriate policies to support enterprises importing and exporting pesticides, such as reducing registration times and customs costs. In addition, support measures are being taken to promote the export of small-pack formulations.
