An environmentally friendly sorbent from beets for cleaning Baikal from chemical waste from the pulp and paper mill was developed by Russian scientists from the Ufa State Aviation Technical University. The sorbent is based on beet pulp (waste from sugar beet processing), it is a cheap and very affordable raw material.
Over the past 47 years, the lake has accumulated more than six million cubic meters of waste. In the scientific and educational center "Baikal", which unites various specialists from the Irkutsk region and Buryatia, they are dealing with the problem of cleaning the unique lake. The estimated environmental effect of eliminating the accumulated waste of previous years for the region will amount to 17,7 billion rubles.
