French parliament opposed bee-killing potato imported from Canada
The French parliament strongly opposes the European Commission’s plan to increase limit values for several neonicotinoids, including clothianidin, an insecticide that kills bees, and haloxifop-R, a herbicide that is toxic to human health.
Eric Andrieu, a member of the European Parliament representing south-west France, and president of the European Parliament's Pesticides Committee, recently spoke on the subject, in particular, Canadian potato treated with clothianidine.
“Once again, the European executive body wants to lower sanitary standards in order to bring them in line with the signed commercial contracts. The European Commission is opening our domestic market to third-country products treated with clothianidin, although the substance has been banned throughout the EU since 2018. This is completely unacceptable! " - Eric Andrieu was outraged, focusing on the Comprehensive Trade and Economic Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union (EU), which Europe and the EU Commission signed with Canada.
