Roman Vilfand, supervisor of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, said in an interview with Interfax that in 2019 the grain harvest in Russia will exceed last year's level.
“Now, given the productive moisture, that is, soil moisture, moderately warm weather, we believe that in general there is an increased likelihood that the yield of winter and spring crops will be higher than last year,” the expert noted.
According to him, today we can more confidently talk about winter crops, whose contribution to the gross harvest of grain crops is about fifty percent.
Nevertheless, R. Vilfand declined to make forecasts more definitely: “Forecast of gross harvest usually happens somewhere in the middle of June, when we can predict whether there will be drought or not. For winter crops, drought is no longer terrible, since there is enough moisture since spring. But for spring crops it is still not entirely clear ... "
