According to the Russian Agricultural Bank, the volume of production of domestic plant protection products by the end of this year will reach 175 thousand tons. At the same time, by 2030 the share of domestically produced pesticides in the Russian market will increase to 70%.
Since 2017, the production of plant protection products in Russia has increased by 1,6 times; in 2022, Russian manufacturers continue to increase volumes. According to the forecasts of the RSHB, the volume of production of plant protection products by the end of 2022 will be about 175 thousand tons. (109,4 thousand tons at the end of 2017). The main driver of growth will be an increase in demand, which will increase by 5-7% per year over the next 5 years. In the coming years, the domestic market will grow steadily, and by 2030 the production volume will reach 280 thousand tons per year. The increase in demand will occur due to the further intensification of agriculture, the introduction of new agricultural land, which in turn will increase the need for herbicides and fungicides to expand the sown areas.
As of October 2022, the volume of Russian production of plant protection products in physical terms amounted to 152 thousand tons. At the same time, herbicides took 68% (103 thousand tons), fungicides - 17% (26 thousand tons), insecticides - 14% (22 thousand tons), less than 1% (983 tons) were occupied by anti-sprouting agents and plant growth regulators1 .
“Russian manufacturers have made great progress in creating pesticides in the form of preparations. Today, Russia has enough resources to meet the needs of domestic farmers, however, it is necessary to develop new high-tech industries for the domestic synthesis of active substances that meet the requirements of not only drug manufacturers, but also modern environmental requirements and standards for the disposal of waste from the chemical industry. Modern plant protection products will help preserve the harvest, increase productivity and production volumes of domestic farmers. In addition, in the coming years in Russia there will be a trend towards the greening of agriculture, which will also contribute to the growth of the Russian biopesticides market. Now the share of crops processed by them is about 2% and will grow,” said Natalya Khudyakova, head of the Center for Macroeconomic and Regional Analysis and Forecasting of the Russian Agricultural Bank.
The value of the Russian market for plant protection products in 2021 amounted to 175 billion rubles, while 52% of the products were domestic. According to Rosselkhozbank estimates, the gradual substitution of imported products will continue in the next 5 years. The share of Russian chemical protective equipment will continue to increase by 3-5% per year and will be about 70% by 2030. The development of the Russian market is provided, among other things, by the volume of imports of raw materials (42% of imports of such components come from China, 36% from Europe). According to RSHB analysts, imports of raw materials will continue to grow in 2023. So, in 2021, the volume of imports of components for the synthesis of pesticides amounted to 72 thousand tons, in 2022 the volume can increase to 80 thousand tons.
