According to the portal Potato News TodayThe company McCain Foods said there is a need to take action to improve the sustainability of selected foods, including the iconic French fries, with a key focus on a more sustainable approach to potato farming.
“Global food demand has never been higher and farmers have to produce more for less while facing increasingly challenging weather conditions due to climate change,” said Max Kuhn, President and CEO McCain Foods Ltd.
“Farmers are at the center of the food supply chain, and the food supply problems we faced during the pandemic can only get worse if we don't take action,” he continued.
The company considers the construction of three "farms of the future" to be its contribution to the process of increasing the stability of food production.
Innovative farms will be created in partnership with leading scientists and developers of advanced technologies, jointly creating a model of a financially viable enterprise capable of increasing food production without harming the environment.
The innovative commercial farms will be built in three countries around the world, in different climates. The first farm of the future will appear in the province of New Brunswick (Canada), where the head office is located McCain.
“We have been partnering with many manufacturers for generations and this is the next step in securing the future of this important industry,” says Max Kuhn.
For the first time the idea of creating "farms of the future" was announced during the first report McCain about sustainable development. The report summarizes the company's plans in this area. The list of key business principles includes environmental commitments (introduce zero-waste production technologies, use 100% renewable energy and reduce CO emissions2 50% by 2030). Along with them, there is a commitment to produce quality food (a plan has been developed to reduce the sodium content in the company's products by 15% by 2025). The company also guarantees the provision of complete information on the composition of its products.
“I hope that every customer who buys our chips will enjoy it even more, knowing that they are supporting Canadian farmers with their purchase,” says Max Kuhn. “We strive to make our products planet-friendly - and we will.”
