Vegetable prices should drop significantly in Russia by the end of summer, said Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachev at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.
“This year, prices (for vegetables - ed.) Stabilized only at the end of June, and as of July 17, 2017, when the first harvest from the south of the country appeared on the shelves, the price decline was 7%; by August-September, prices for vegetables will be significantly lower, ”Tkachev said.
He added that "usually May is the peak month for a surge in prices: own products are in short supply, volumes of imported products reach their maximum, and in June the price has traditionally decreased."
“In order to minimize seasonal price spikes in subsequent years, it is necessary to build more vegetable stores, which would allow to consume domestic products before their own summer harvest,” the minister said.
The state program for the development of agriculture provides for state support for the construction and modernization of storages for potatoes, vegetables and fruits. Last year, Russia built and modernized storage facilities with a total capacity of 250 thousand tons of one-time storage; at the beginning of this year, the total capacity of potato and vegetable storages in the Russian Federation was about 6,9 million tons.
Until 2020, it is planned to commission facilities for another 1,6 million tons of storage, which will allow a quarter to increase the current storage capacity.
