Extremely hot weather established in Lower Saxony only pleases farmers.
The Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony is considered the main production site for potatoes. Almost all of May there was a drought, which continued with the beginning of June. However, potato growers are not upset: modern irrigation systems operate for several weeks.
“In Lower Saxony we currently have extreme dry weather problems. It doesn't make any difference to growing potatoes right now. But if the dry weather continues throughout June and July, we will indeed have serious problems with our plants, ”says Volker Peters, managing director of a potato company. - In the Luneburg Heath, about 95 percent of the fields are currently irrigated. But on the other side of the Elbe, in the East German states, these irrigation systems are not available, and problematic weather can lead to lower yields, but again, not necessarily. "
According to Peters, it is too early to predict the season. ““ This weather even has its advantages: from the 2017 harvest, we had seedlings that were very susceptible to fusarium and powdery mildew. And thanks to the drought, almost all potatoes grow very well and there are no problems with diseases. ”
