Branston, a potato grower in Lincolnshire, UK, has developed an unusual new potato variety that can be cooked extremely quickly.
In a press release, the company says that the new Nemo variety is named after the clownfish of the same name from the cartoon Finding Nemo, due to the unusual color of the tubers: the main color of the peel is pink, but there are creamy yellow spots around the eyes. The flesh of the tubers is golden yellow, with a homogeneous structure, thanks to which the potatoes cook quickly.
This new variety was developed by crossing between Inca Bella (a very fast-cooking Peruvian hybrid) and the popular red lettuce variety Franceline, which grows well in the UK climate.
David Nelson, Branston's director of agronomy, said in a press release, "We've been working on this project for the past six years looking for a variety that not only tastes great, but saves time on roasting."
Branston has been growing and testing Nemo since 2015. The variety consistently shows good results in all tastings.
To cook fried potatoes, they can be peeled and boiled five minutes before frying. Nemo is also perfect for salads and mashed potatoes, making it versatile.
