Makro, a Polish supermarket chain, will replace plastic pots for fresh herbs with cellulose pots by March 2020. This solution will reduce the amount of plastic used to 5,5 tons per year.
Cellulose bioplastics are widely available and are used to produce compostable packaging. Using the natural composting method, such packaging does not leave toxic contaminants.
In September 2019, the wholesale chain introduced paper packaging for fresh herbs in pots, thereby reducing plastic consumption by 3 tons per year. After a complete replacement of the packaging, the company will reduce the use of plastic to 10 tons per year. Also, the entire assortment, including 20 types of fresh herbs in pots, will be sold under the new Chef BIO brand, marked with a certificate of organic farming.
