A new study by Corteva Agriscience and the Financial Times Group shows that consumers are ready to apply new technologies in agriculture.
The study showed that European consumers and farmers consider sustainable development a top priority, and they are also open to innovative technologies that can contribute to the production of more nutritious and healthy products. The Sustainable Food Systems in Europe1 study was commissioned by Corteva Agriscience by Longitude from the Financial Times Group.
According to the report, more than two-thirds of the farmers surveyed plan to use products obtained thanks to new plant breeding methods in the next five years, while more than half of consumers are positive about the use of these technologies in general.
The study is based on two surveys, which involved 600 owners and farm managers from France, Germany, Italy, Romania, the UK and Ukraine, as well as 2500 consumers from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK and Ukraine.
The results of the study showed that when buying food products produced in a sustainable way, consumers primarily care about reducing waste, providing support to small farmers and reducing the number of synthetic plant protection products. The study also highlights the challenges that farmers face when adopting more sustainable practices, such as financial costs.
In addition, the study shows that more than a quarter of farmers consider satisfying consumer demand the greatest challenge in the near future, correlating it in importance with combating a large number of pests. Also, farmers recognize that society has become more confident in new plant breeding methods, such as CRISPR- Cas / gene editing. Nearly nine out of ten farmers believe that consumers are willing to pay more for goods produced using innovative technologies.
Igor Teslenko, President of Corteva Agriscience in Europe, said: “This study shows that there is a real need for more sustainable food production in Europe. Corteva Agriscience has good potential to support a two-way dialogue on sustainable agriculture, giving farmers not only a vision from consumers, but also an opportunity to be heard.
It is good to know that consumers and farmers are ready to use new plant breeding methods that have a multi-community potential for growing more nutritious products that can enrich the lives of producers and consumers. Consumers are willing to pay more for products produced in a sustainable way, and now it is an opportunity for all interested parties, including industry, to respond and show their support. ”
“Corteva Agriscience puts the consumer and the farmer at the core of everything we do. Therefore, we are constantly introducing innovations, forming the product portfolio of the future.
By offering comprehensive solutions for agriculture, including seeds, crop protection products, agronomic services and digital solutions with a more favorable environmental profile, we enable our customers to increase their productivity and produce healthy food for the growing population of the planet, ”concluded Igor Teslenko.
