The change in prices for onions in Tajikistan should take place closer to the winter of this year, the Tajikmatlubota (Tajikpotrebsoyuz) reported at a press conference, reports portal Sputnik Tajikistan.
According to the head of the society Khusain Idiyev, such a forecast was made based on the results of market research, according to the needs of the population and the pace of production.
In the meantime, consumers pay about 6-8 somoni (about $0,80) per kilogram of onion. The new price has not yet been announced.
“Now I cannot say at what prices we will buy potatoes and onions in September, but I am sure that the cost will decrease,” Idiyev said.
According to the director of Tajikmatlubot, throughout the country the company has 47 warehouses and 3 refrigeration rooms for storing agricultural products.
Basically, two types of agricultural products are stored there - potatoes and onions, 700-800 tons each.
“We start stocking up somewhere in September and we can store more than 1 tons of agricultural products in warehouses and refrigeration,” Idiyev said.
He also noted that it is impossible to compete with the market with the indicated volume of storage of vegetables, and therefore it will also be difficult to influence prices.
As for the reasons for the rise in the price of onions, Idiyev named an increase in the volume of exports of this agricultural crop. Earlier during this period, onions in the bazaars cost no more than 3 somoni (0,29 dollars) per kilogram.
