According to preliminary forecasts by the NEPG (Association of Potato Producers of Northwest Europe), potato cultivation areas (excluding seed potatoes and industrial potatoes for starch production) in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK will increase by 2019-1% in 2 compared to 2018 year and for the first time exceed 600 thousand hectares.
NEPG also predicts an increase in potato yields in 4 EU countries: Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium.
"With an average yield over the past ten years (46,7 tons / ha), the potato harvest in 2019 may reach 28,2 million tons, which is 3,9 million tons or 15,9% more than a year earlier.", - the message says the portal sadyogrody.pl
According to experts, the current year's crop could have been higher, but a poor harvest in the 2018 season led to a shortage of seed potatoes for planting.
It is clarified that the price of potatoes in Germany over the past month increased by 5-6% to a record level of 351-370 euros per ton.
