Onions continue to fall in price on the Russian market. According to the EastFruit project, the trend towards a price decline was outlined in the previous week, and since Monday, Russian farmers have been forced to revise prices more actively, citing weak demand.
At the same time, a decrease in consumer activity is observed not only in relation to low-quality products: this week, demand fell for high-quality onions. It is worth noting that the deterioration in the rate of onion trade in Russia is observed against the background of quite large volumes of imports, primarily from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Today, suppliers of imported onions are also unhappy with the low activity of Russian buyers. The price of imported products today varies between 16-18 rubles / kg ($ 0,25-0,28 / kg).
According to experts, the main pressure on prices now has low quality onions, the supply of which has increased sharply with warming in the local market. Farms are actively sorting products in storage, while many note a large percentage of substandard onions, which farmers are now ready to ship at 12-16 rubles / kg ($ 0,19-0,25 / kg). The price of quality onions fell to 17-26 rubles / kg ($ 0,27-0,41 / kg), which is on average 6% cheaper than at the end of the last working week.
Note that at the moment the price of onions in Russia is on average 2 times higher than in mid-April 2018. According to market participants, a slight increase in prices in this segment is possible only for high-quality onions, whose supply in Russia is really limited.
