The first crop of seed potatoes of special varieties for processing will soon be harvested in the Arkhangelsk region, reports "Russian newspaper".
In order for restaurant fries to be covered with a beautiful crust and at the same time remain crumbly, special varieties are needed. Previously, seed potatoes for processing into French fries were delivered directly from Europe. Now, due to sanctions, this has become impossible, and Russian suppliers have remembered that elite tubers have long been grown in the Arkhangelsk region: the first bank of healthy varieties in Russia was created in Pomorie 15 years ago. And today, elite potatoes are grown annually in four districts of the region.
The northern lands have a number of advantages for seed producers, the main one being the absence of pests that are not able to overwinter in deeply freezing soil. Another important factor is the white nights: due to the fact that in the summer the sun hardly sets in the Arctic, the tubers quickly gain weight.
This year, for the first time, Voronezh potato producers for Russian fast food restaurants “looked at the North”. At the Kotlas Experimental Station, they are already preparing to harvest a "restaurant" crop - the approximate volume of elite seeds will be 600 tons. Next year they will be planted in the fields of the Voronezh region, after which deliveries for fast food chains will begin.
