Scientists at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (ICG) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and scientific organizations of China have concluded agreements on the implementation of two joint projects in the field of potato growing until 2025. As the Institute’s press service said on Wednesday, the projects are dedicated to creating elite planting stock and processing potatoes.
“Two Russian-Chinese complex scientific and technical projects were signed as part of a large joint work in the field of potato growing until 2025. The first project concerns the creation of a Seed Breeding Center in the region, where elite planting material will be created. The second one is about a potato processing laboratory, which will be opened at the institute, its employees will solve a wide range of biochemical problems associated with processing the crop, ”the press service said.
The total budget of the two projects amounted to over 2 billion rubles. “We will get one of the largest full-cycle projects in the field of science and agriculture for the Novosibirsk Region,” the press service of the Institute’s senior researcher Vadim Khlestkin quotes.
As previously reported, this year the scientists of the ICG for the first time planted potato seedlings grown from test tubes, which by the autumn should produce about 40 thousand tubers that maintain a high yield for 10 years.
