Scientists of the Tomsk Research Institute of Agriculture and Peat (branch of the Siberian Federal Research Center of Agrobiotechnology RAS)
bred a new potato variety that is resistant to parasites and has a high yield; work on another variety with similar characteristics is planned to be completed in the next three years, Margarita Romanova, deputy director of the institute for scientific research, told RIA Tomsk.
According to her, many potato varieties brought to Tomsk can not withstand severe weather conditions, and Tomsk breeders are developing two new varieties that can work well even in harsh climates.
“The uniqueness of the new varieties is that they are adapted to our (weather) conditions and have the necessary qualities. In particular, it is resistant to golden potato nematode and excellent taste. Also, they should be higher than the standard in terms of yield, this is a mandatory requirement for all new varieties, ”said Romanova.
She added that the new variety was named "Daughter". Scientists have been working on it for 18 years. It will be submitted to the State Variety Test this year.
Romanova also said that work on another potato variety, which will also be resistant to the golden potato nematode and will have a good taste and high yield, will last another three years.
According to open sources, the golden potato nematode is a microscopic worm that infects the root system or tubers of a plant. The infected leaves quickly die off the lower leaves, the rest turn yellow, flowering is very poor or absent altogether. As a result, tubers are poorly formed. An infected plant can die long before the fall.
