In August 2019, Ukraine imported about 4,3 thousand tons of potatoes for a total of $ 795 thousand.
The volume of potato imports to this country in August 2019 was a record for the entire history of the country.
“The previous two seasons we had a good potato harvest and the annual import demand was limited to 3-5 thousand tons. In seasons with poor harvests, the need for imports was 15-18 thousand tons, but even then we never imported potatoes in August. August and September are the period of the largest supply of local potatoes. This year, due to bad weather, the late potato varieties were delayed by several weeks. This was used by exporters in Belarus, where prices in August were significantly lower, ”said Tatiana Getman, head of the Analytics department of the Shuvar wholesale market for agricultural products in Lvov.
According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, in previous lean years, the state needed a potato import in the second half of spring and early summer.
