According to the correspondent of IA Kazakh-Zerno, a new laboratory for the microclonal propagation of potatoes was created as part of a UN Economic Commission for Europe project to introduce food quality standards.
The laboratory will increase the volume of cultivation of healthy seed material. Leningrad Oblast is one of the leaders in Russia in the production of micro plants and minicubers of seed potatoes. Today the region produces almost a third of seed tubers in Russia.
The laboratory for microclonal propagation of potatoes was built with funding from the United Nations as part of a project by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe to introduce seed potato quality standards. The Leningrad region was selected for the project as a region with developed seed production.
Today, at the professional level, 8 farms are engaged in seed potato production in the region, which are certified in the Rosselkhoztsentr voluntary certification system and entered into the unified register of seed growing farms of the Russian Federation. The region already has 3 meristem laboratories.
The region annually produces about 8 thousand tons of seed potatoes for 33 regions of Russia. In 2017, the region's farms harvested almost 2018 thousand tons of seed potatoes by the sowing season of 22, 210% of the needs of the region's enterprises.
