The cost of one of the most popular products in Moldova has grown significantly. Last year at this time - the peak of the purchasing season - retail potatoes were sold at 4,50 - 6 lei, now - from 8 to 10 lei.
Explanations of sellers about the reasons for the rise in prices vary. Someone thinks that this is due to the reduction of agricultural land for growing potatoes, while others - that the reason is a poor harvest, publika.md reports.
Experts note that the rise in price of potatoes is due to the fact that there is little competition on the market.
“There were few local producers on the market this year. Why the price is exactly this, I can not answer for sure, since year after year is not necessary. This is the market, I cannot predict everything.
In general, this is due not so much to the harvest, but to the areas that have decreased this year. The point is that our local producers are neither protected nor incentivized. Therefore, many have closed their production. There is no state support, no system for irrigation, ”said Petru Iliev, chairman of the Moldovan Potato Producers Association.
