In order to clarify the boundaries of previously identified foci of potato cancer in personal subsidiary farms of the Zhiryatinsky region, phytosanitary inspectors of the Rosselkhoznadzor Office for the Bryansk, Smolensk and Kaluga regions conducted a control survey of this area.
The examinations of the selected samples, carried out on the basis of the Bryansk interregional veterinary laboratory subordinate to the Rosselkhoznadzor, confirmed the presence of potato crayfish zoosporangia (Synchytrium endobioticum (Schilb.) Percival) in soil samples. Thus, the previously established quarantine phytosanitary zone in the village. Sparrow, s. Kulnevo and Kolodnya village on the area of 2,65 hectares is preserved.
Recall that potato cancer is a quarantine disease caused by the lower fungus Synchytrium endobioticum. A typical sign of cancer in potatoes is the formation of outgrowths on tubers, stolons and root collars. With a strong development of the disease, growths can also form on the stem, leaves and flowers. Tuber eyes and young shoots are primarily affected. The roots are not affected. In appearance, the growths resemble cauliflower. Affected tubers are not capable of long-term storage and quickly rot. It is not recommended to use them even for livestock feed.
