Scientists at the INIA Institute in Peru created GM potatoes to combat childhood anemia. This genetically modified plant variety is adapted for cultivation on the territory of the Andes South American mountain range.
New purple GM potatoes contain an increased amount of zinc and iron, and therefore can be successfully used in the treatment of anemia, a disease that affects almost half of children of three years old and younger living in Peru. The new “healing” fruit variety is also rich in antioxidants. It received the name "INIA 328-Kulli Papa".
In total, over 4 varieties of potatoes are grown in the Andes.
