Selling prices for onions increase in Russia after the New Year holidays, project analysts report Eastfruit. Market participants explain this by increased demand for onions from wholesale companies and retail chains, as well as a noticeable reduction in imported products, as this week there were practically no onions from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan on the Russian market.
Today, Russian farmers manage to ship high-quality onions at prices ranging from 12 to 20 rubles/kg ($0,16-0,26/kg), which is 15% more expensive on average than at the end of the last working week.
The increase in selling prices in this segment is explained by market participants by the high demand for good quality onions from wholesale companies. However, according to wholesale companies, the main problems arise not with the quantity, but with the quality of products. Due to the dry summer this season, the farms managed to harvest a limited amount of quality onions.
To date, onion prices in Russia are on average 22% higher than in the same period in 2021. Key market players are confident that the price of this product will continue to rise, as farms have limited stocks of high-quality onions. Most farmers declare their intention to continue to revise prices upwards, provided that the current sales rates are maintained.
