The VII General Assembly of the World Farmers Organization (hereinafter - WFO) is taking place in Moscow from 28 to 30 May.
On May 28, the Minister of Agriculture of Russia Dmitry Patrushev, President of the World Farming Organization Theo De Jager, President of the Association of Peasant (Farming) Farms and Agricultural Cooperatives of Russia Vladimir Plotnikov took part in the opening ceremony of the General Assembly of the WFO.
In his welcoming address, Dmitry Patrushev emphasized that it is a great honor for our country to welcome farmers from all over the world for the first time.
“More than 170 representatives of farmer organizations from 55 countries of the world have gathered to participate in the General Assembly. We can say that these days Moscow will become the world's farming capital of the planet, ”the Minister noted.
Dmitry Patrushev noted that the development of the farming movement is one of the most important tasks facing the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia.
“To support farmers, we use a wide range of tools to improve the efficiency of state support, develop cooperation, and provide comfortable and high-quality living conditions for farmers and their families. In particular, thanks to the efforts of the state, farms in Russia are the most dynamically developing sector of the agricultural economy. Farmers in Russia today are more than 205 thousand farms, which annually increase the production of agricultural products. Every year, the contribution of farmers to the Russian economy is steadily growing, ”said Dmitry Patrushev.
Today, farmers occupy key positions in ensuring global food security. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, farmers produce more than 80% of world food in value terms.
The main theme of the General Assembly this year is to enhance the role of farmers and their associations in the formation of effective agriculture in the context of global climate change.
Thematic discussions focus on the global role of farmers in achieving food security goals, adapting to climate change, and introducing innovations. The debate will also focus on a fair distribution of income in the value chain and the movement of products from field to counter.
The Minister of Agriculture of Russia Dmitry Patrushev expressed confidence that the result of the work of the General Assembly will be agreed decisions that will lay the foundation for an action plan for next year.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly, participants in the largest farming event in the world will hold high-level meetings with heads of foreign delegations, representatives of Russian and foreign farming organizations and agricultural cooperatives, and will also be able to visit small-scale agribusiness enterprises in the Moscow region.
The WFO Annual General Assembly is a significant international agrarian event, reminding the international community of the decisive role of farmers in the global agenda for achieving sustainable agricultural development.
Since 2012, meetings have been held in Italy, Japan, Argentina, Zambia and Finland.
The decision on the venue of the General Assembly of the Volga Federal District in 2018 in Moscow was made at the General Assembly of the Volga Federal District in Helsinki. Representatives of 80 farming organizations from all over the world took part in the vote. This decision testifies to the worldwide recognition of the success of the development of Russian farming and the interest of foreign partners in enhancing cooperation with our country.
