In Salekhard this spring, 2000 potato seeds from the Arctic Bank of Healthy Plants will sprout.
Then the sprouts will be planted in greenhouse areas, and when the weather permits, they will be transferred to open ground. At the end of the 2023 season, it is expected to receive at least a ton of potato seed material of the Russian Yamal selection, which is noteworthy, as a result, producers will receive many times more than the finished product.
Yamal continues to implement the Arctic Bank of Healthy Potatoes program. The project solves one of the key tasks of the President of the country — ensuring import substitution in seed production.
In Salekhard, at the site of the Yamal experimental station, scientists from the Tyumen Scientific Center and Yamal specialists have been developing virus-free seed material since last year, which is successfully delivered to Tyumen and the Tyumen region. As it became known, in the next two years, commercial batches of seed potatoes will begin to be delivered to the regions of our country.
“Our project helps to solve the problem of ensuring the technological sovereignty of Russia and at the same time creates favorable conditions for domestic entrepreneurs. In our agricultural land and laboratories, we have created an absolutely favorable environment for growing seed potatoes, without the participation of foreign raw materials,” said Maxim Maksimchik, director of the Yamal Experimental Station.
