The main topic of the working meeting between the Governor of the Kostroma Region Sergey Sitnikov and the Rector of the Kostroma Agricultural Academy Mikhail Volkhonov was the development of seed production on the basis of the Agricultural Academy, reports Portal of State bodies of the Kostroma region. This is a matter of food security, the governor emphasized. In the biotechnology laboratory, it is planned to grow vegetable and potato seeds on an industrial scale, primarily to provide farmers in the Kostroma region.
“The Academy can become a platform for obtaining seeds of the so-called “borscht set”. We are ready to receive seeds of carrots, garlic, onions and other crops. We now produce a fairly large number of virus-free potato seeds using in vitro technology. We can propagate other plants using the same technology. The potential of the academy is quite serious, which is very important in our time, ”said Mikhail Volkhonov, rector of the KSCA.
Sergei Sitnikov instructed the AIC Department to provide the necessary assistance to the Agricultural Academy in the development of an important direction for the region and the country as a whole.
“The task is fundamentally important - this is to ensure national food security, we must move away from imported seed material. We understand this. Imported seed material was built just on the basis of the work that is described here, what an agricultural academy can do. Therefore, any support should be provided. This is a priority today,” said Sergey Sitnikov, Governor of the Kostroma Region.
