Specialists of the "Krasnoyarsk FMC" together with farmers staged a large-scale inspection of potatoes. As a result, bacteria were detected in all five samples purchased. For humans, they are not dangerous, but they can affect yield. TCE news learned how to identify tubers worthy of planting.
According to experts, first of all, when choosing potatoes for planting, you need to pay attention to the juice of vegetables: the darker the liquid, the more bacteria are contained in them.
The exact number of viruses and their types, experts determine using a tablet photometer.
Experts note that before planting it is very important to purchase high-quality potatoes.
“More often than not, we do not care about the quality of the seed. Sometimes we change bucket to bucket with our neighbors and believe that in this way we updated the seed material. And we are replanting for 20-40 years, ”said Valentina Bopp, Vice-Rector for Science at the Krasnoyarsk State Agar University.
In this regard, experts decided to check the potatoes. For examination, they purchased 5 samples of potatoes. Four of them are domestic production, and one is from Finland.
Each tuber experts measured the waist and height, and also checked the condition of the skin and the "starchy filling."
As a result, all 5 types of potatoes were infected with viruses. Least of all diseases were found in the Finnish Colomba variety. The worst in all respects was the Russian Memphis variety.
“In fact, out of 10 tubers, only 1 gave full shoots. All the others do not emerge due to the high degree of infection with bacterial infections, wet rot, ”said Andrei Churakov, a leading specialist in the original seed laboratory.
As practice shows, summer residents are accustomed to plant small tubers of potatoes, and large ones to use for food or sell. However, experts note that it is in small potatoes that the largest number of viruses and bacteria accumulate. Because of this, summer residents get a bad harvest, and potatoes are also stored worse.
From July 1, the updated GOSTs for ware potatoes come into force. They regulate the size of the tubers. So, in the early stages, the size of the potato should not exceed 28 mm by 28 mm. The maximum potato size is 80 mm by 80 mm.
“Certain sizes are given when we can relate it to different species - first grade, second and third. The tuber should not have a greenish color. Brown spots should not be on the tuber, ”the beginning said. Department of Standardization and Conformity Assessment FBU Krasnoyarsk TSSM Tatyana Melnik.
The new standard complies with European rules, therefore it will also apply to imported potatoes, which are sold in considerable quantities in Krasnoyarsk stores. Farmers hope that the new rules will improve the quality of the seed, and then the vegetables themselves.
