At a seminar on potato growing, which was held on the basis of the national scientific laboratory of the East Kazakhstan State University named after Sarsen Amanzholov, experts named the best varieties of potatoes.
As you know, Kazakhstan almost completely provides itself with second bread. However, in order for Kazakh potatoes to also be exported, it is necessary to increase their production, says Nadezhda Mikheeva in her material on the KazakhZerno portal about what scientists discussed at the seminar. At the same time, as the project manager, senior researcher at the Laboratory of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, candidate of agricultural sciences Galina Kuzmina, noted, it’s not enough just to increase the landing area.
- We offer vegetable growers new varieties of potatoes and original elite seed production. The new system is based on biotechnological methods of growing crops, propagating plants that are free from viruses, fungi and other harmful bacterial infections.
We have already implemented this method in Ulan Zhenis LLP. As a result, they received 1 thousand tons of elite seeds, and the yield reached 40 tons per hectare, she said.
The successful results of the joint work were confirmed by Valentina Nikolaeva, an agronomist-seed producer of Ulan-Zhemis LLP. According to her, up to 25 potatoes can be obtained from one tuber of the most promising varieties. And in general, test-tube potatoes, as she stressed, are fruitful, unpretentious, tasty, healthy, beautiful in shape and color. In the laboratory of clonal micropropagation of zoned and promising potato varieties adapted to the agro-climatic conditions of East Kazakhstan, scientists have managed to select more than 60 potato varieties and identify the most productive for original and elite seed production.
After analyzing the productivity of varieties from the gene pool of the CIS countries and foreign breeding centers, the most promising groups included: Luck (Russia), Rosara (Germany), Red Scarlet and Roco (Holland). Of the regional varieties bred in the laboratory, Izolda, Vostochny-1, Tavria and Shakird entered here.
A senior researcher shared her experience using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to determine the viral and bacterial infections in the original and elite seed production system. She gave examples of the use of biotechnology to obtain potato raw material in vitro (from a test tube) for original seed production. The seminar participants were informed that 5 varieties of potatoes from the world and university breeds were transferred for state examination from East Kazakhstan region. East Kazakhstan scientists hope that they will undergo regionalization.
Perhaps one of the main information was that the laboratory developed a special potato variety for diabetics with a low starch content. The seminar also examined the issues of evaluation and selection of potato varieties of super early and early ripening.
