Russian researchers have come up with a way to protect potatoes from black scab, a disease that leads to significant crop losses. The authors of the development were specialists from Tomsk State University, Novosibirsk State Agrarian University, and the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the SB RAS.
Scientists have proposed treating potatoes before planting with special bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Thanks to this measure, the pathogenicity of scab is reduced fourfold.
Thanks to the new method, it has already been possible to increase potato yields by 30%. The use of environmentally friendly bacteria can be a worthy alternative to chemical fungicides.
