British supermarket chain Waitrose & Partners has launched the Waitrose Unpacked initiative, which sells products in bulk. The press service of the network writes about this.
Among the goods are fruits and vegetables, both fresh and frozen, dried fruits, nuts, coffee and pasta. The project aims to reduce the amount of plastic used, replacing it with paper and cardboard packaging. Some frozen fruits and berries, such as mangoes, strawberries, blueberries, cherries, raspberries and pineapples will be allowed to mix. So, buyers will have the opportunity to make their own berry mixes.
Sales are currently in test mode at the Botley Road store located in Oxford. In the future, marketers will determine what products customers are willing to buy without packaging.
For customer convenience, purchased fruits and vegetables can be folded into reusable kraft paper bags or bags. All bulk items are not in unit packages, but in special dispensers.
The initiative will run until August 18, after which the supermarket staff will process the collected feedback. The results of the project will be published on the official website of the company.
