The European Commission has published a decision to extend the ban on the use of chlorprofam herbicide (CIPC) from January 1, 2020.
The sector acknowledged the dangers of using a herbicide, but finding an alternative is not easy.
It is especially difficult for potato producers when laying the harvest for storage, since CIPC particles can remain on the frames of wooden boxes for a long time, despite the suspension of the use of the drug. Most new storage facilities did not use a herbicide.
According to Romain Kuls, secretary of the Belgian Belgopom potato processors association, the ban on the use of CIPC without any alternatives threatens the entire European sector.
According to the decree, the grace period for the EU countries will last until October 8, 2020 in accordance with Article 46 of Regulation (EU) No 1107/2009.
