The import of potatoes from Belarus and the beginning of harvesting brought down high prices for this agricultural crop in Ukraine
At the end of the previous week, prices for Ukrainian potatoes were still the highest in the region. Meanwhile, by the end of August 26, prices for potatoes in Ukraine were lower than even in Poland, writes "DS" with reference to EastFruit.
Among the factors that led to pressure on prices, analysts called an increase in the supply of products on the market and harvesting potatoes by the population.
“The difference in the price of potatoes in Ukraine and Belarus last week was sufficient to activate the supply of products to the Ukrainian market from the neighboring country, which led to an increase in the supply of products on the market and began to put pressure on prices,” analysts said.
In addition, the population traditionally picks potatoes during national holidays, which also led to a sharp increase in the supply of potatoes on the market, notes "Economic Truth".
At the same time, major buyers of potatoes mostly rested on weekends, which led to a significant excess of supply over demand in the wholesale markets.
“On average, potatoes have fallen in price by UAH 2,0-2,5 over the holiday period, which has become the sharpest decline in prices this season,” experts noted.
Nevertheless, the level of prices for potatoes in Ukraine is still very high. Last year, at the same time, prices for it in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and Poland were practically the same - about 14-15 US cents per kg. Currently, such a price level is only available in the Russian Federation market - where potatoes are sold at an average of 16-18 US cents per kg.
In Ukraine and Poland - prices are almost twice as high as a year earlier, and in Belarus - by 30-40% higher than a year earlier.
According to experts, potato yields in households in many regions of the country this year will be relatively low due to adverse weather conditions.
