This week, the pace of carrot sales in Russia has slowed significantly. According to daily project monitoring Eastfruit To date, significant carrots remain in the storage facilities of Russian households, but the percentage of products that could satisfy all the requirements of retail chains and wholesale companies is relatively small.
Farmers themselves report that they are constantly forced to sort out carrots, while the reject rate is much higher compared to the same period last year.
So, at the moment, selling prices for carrots are announced in the range of 7-13 rubles / kg ($ 0,11-0,21 / kg), which is on average 9% cheaper than at the end of the last working week. According to manufacturers, pressure on prices has a very restrained demand for these products. Wholesale companies and retail chains are ready to purchase these root crops only in small batches, explaining their decision by the extremely low sales rates in retail.
Farmers attribute the quality problems to adverse weather conditions during the carrot harvest period, because of heavy rains, the products were laid for storage wet. This problem is especially acute for manufacturers whose storage facilities are not properly equipped.
Under the current conditions, a number of farmers have already announced their decision to suspend carrot sales. It is worth emphasizing that in this case we are talking primarily about the owners of high quality products. They plan to resume sales only when the market situation improves. At the same time, they consider selling at current prices unreasonable, since at the moment the cost of carrots in Russia is already on average 32% lower than in the same period last year.
