Scientists of the Russian State Agrarian University (Moscow Agricultural Academy named after K.A. Timiryazev) received copyright certificates for three new high-yielding cabbage hybrids, the press service reports Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
Previously, in our country there were no hybrids resistant to diseases such as keel and pests such as thrips. The expected yield is at least 100 tons per hectare, and they will be available to buyers next year.
The Timiryazev Academy is actively working on import substitution of cabbage hybrids. Traditionally, Russian selection occupied 20% of the domestic market. Now breeders are making every effort to offer the country new hybrids of one of the most popular vegetable crops. And the received patents and copyright certificates for three new hybrids are another confirmation of this.
“Breeding new varieties and ensuring food security are part of the strategic project of Timiryazevka as part of the implementation of the federal program Priority 2030. Three new cabbage hybrids - Barynya, Otchelnik and Dobrodey - belong to the group of late-ripening cabbages most suitable for cultivation in Russia. Seven months of winter poses a challenge for scientists not only to increase yields, but also to longer storage. Plant resistance to harmful diseases and insect pests is very relevant for both amateur vegetable growers and manufacturers. For example, the aforementioned hybrids are resistant to diseases such as clubroot, fusarium wilt. Previously, it was believed that it was impossible to create cabbage with resistance to keel. Now such cabbage is available to any summer resident, farmer and agronomist and guarantees maximum yield in areas inhabited by phytopathogens, ”explained Socrates Monakhos, head of the Department of Botany, Breeding and Seed Production of Garden Plants.
