Scientists of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (ICG) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and scientific organizations of China have concluded agreements on the implementation of two joint projects in the field of potato growing by 2025. As the press service of the institute said on Wednesday, the projects are dedicated to the creation of elite planting material and potato processing.
“Two Russian-Chinese complex scientific and technical projects have been signed as part of a large joint work in the field of potato growing until 2025. The first project concerns the creation of a Seed Breeding Center in the region, where elite planting material will be created. The second is about a laboratory for processing potatoes, which will be opened at the institute, its employees will solve a wide range of biochemical problems related to the processing of the resulting crop, ”the press service said.
The total budget of the two projects amounted to over 2 billion rubles. “We will get one of the largest full-cycle projects in the field of science and agriculture for the Novosibirsk region,” the press service of the senior researcher of the institute Vadim Khlestkin is quoted as saying.
As previously reported, this year, ICG scientists planted potato seedlings grown from test tubes for the first time, which by autumn should produce about 40 thousand tubers that retain high yields for 10 years.
