Scientists from the Tyumen Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Tyumen State University are studying potatoes and soil in the northern regions, creating an Arctic bank of healthy promising varieties, reports official website of the Yamao Government.
“The practical end result of our joint work is the continuous renewal and improvement of the seed stocks of industrial enterprises. Including to reduce unproductive waste - on average around the country, about 40% of the annual crop is sent for recycling due to the low storage capacity of the potato varieties used and their susceptibility to diseases,” explains Maksim Maksimchik, director of the Yamal Experimental Station (YOS).
Research is carried out by specialists from the Research Institute of Agriculture of the Northern Trans-Urals, as well as the leading Russian specialized scientific institution, the Federal Potato Research Center named after A.G. Lorch.
In June 2022, these tests were continued - seed material obtained in 2021 was planted in the soil, as well as microplants of another 130 new potato varieties.
Also in June of this year, research on polar soils for potato phytopathogens was launched on the basis of the NOS. They are carried out within the framework of the all-Russian scientific project on monitoring soil conditions.
