The leadership of the Dashoguz region of Turkmenistan demanded that local peasants start planting potatoes early, despite the unsuitable weather conditions, unprepared soil and lack of agricultural machinery, Azatlyk reports.
Such requirements are associated with the emergence of an acute shortage of this crop in the country due to the closure of the border with Iran, the main importer of potatoes to Turkmenistan. The restriction was introduced after an outbreak of coronavirus infection occurred in Iran.
It is also noted that due to the continued increase in food prices, the Turkmen authorities continue to try to artificially restrain them by introducing state regulation.
This only led to the fact that sellers in markets and in private stores began to sell potatoes and onions "from the counter."
