Residents of the Taseevsky district found an unusual large insect for these parts. Specialists of the branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Rosselkhoztsentr in the Krasnoyarsk Territory determined that this was the caterpillar of Brazhnik.
Hawk Moths are a family of butterflies, predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal. All members of the family are heat-loving insects, but many species are active migrants and fly into territories that lie much to the north of their breeding grounds. However, the movements of these species to temperate latitudes can be considered dispersive rather than migratory. Caterpillars of most hawk moths have a characteristic "horn" at the rear end of the body. The caterpillar feeds on Ivan-tea plants, bedstraw and grape leaves. It is not dangerous for agricultural plants, therefore it is not necessary to destroy them, for our places they are quite rare. A butterfly is often confused with a hummingbird, as it also hangs over a flower and has a long proboscis (it extracts nectar with it).
Hawk Moth butterflies have already been seen in the vicinity of Krasnoyarsk.
