The British plan to make changes to the DNA of the culture, more precisely, to the zone responsible for the rate of cell softening. According to residents of the kingdom, potatoes take too long to cook, which is why their sales in the country are falling.
Scientists are aiming to create tubers that can be cooked as quickly as pasta. If the scientific experiment is successful, potatoes with edited genes will be offered to commercial companies, for example, chip manufacturers. And then the miracle product will go on general sale.
The new development is also designed to extend the shelf life of potatoes. The ability to preserve crops for a longer time will allow British farmers to reduce their losses.
According to agricultural technologists, changes in the DNA of the tuber will make it possible to obtain almost ideal potatoes, which retain their presentation and freshness for a long time, and are resistant to diseases and pests.
To achieve optimal results, the British are going to use the CRISPR gene editing tool. It allows mutations to be introduced without leaving traces, since the introduced RNA and protein are degraded in the cell. This method, according to scientists, opens up “unprecedented opportunities for rapidly improving the properties of potatoes.”
