According to The Local, Switzerland is experiencing a low potato crop this year, and chip producers note that the country lacks raw materials for processing. At the same time, the demand for chips increased by 30%: due to pandemic restrictions, people are more likely to sit at home, rather than visit restaurants.
Processors claim that to fill the deficit, it is necessary to import at least 20 tons of potatoes. But the entry of products into the country is hampered by complex import regulations aimed at protecting local farmers: a special permit from the Federal Agricultural Administration is required.
Chip makers report that it is impossible to determine at this stage how severe the shortage will be. Conclusions can be made only in December, when the entire crop will be in warehouses.
