Potato growers can now apply the liquid nematicide with a conventional boom sprayer, according to Potatoes News. Velum Prime, Bayer's liquid nematicide containing fluopyram, has been approved for spray application. So far, the application has been limited to furrow application during planting.
Jack Hill, commercial director of horticulture at Bayer, said the news enhances nematode control options while reducing planting workload. “In terms of performance, there is virtually no difference between any application,” said Mr. Hill.
This means manufacturers can choose whichever method best suits the equipment they have. While the performance of both methods is comparable, there are two important practical differences to note. “The application rate of 0,625 l/ha is the same for both application methods,” Hill said. However, he notes that if Velum Prime is applied as a general spray, this should be done with a water flow rate of at least 200 l/ha and not 100 l/ha when applied in furrows. “Secondly, 10-20 cm deep embedding should be done three days before planting,” added Mr. Hill.
