The country intends to ensure that local potatoes are labeled PGI / AOC or “protected geographical indication”. Thus, the product will be more protected from fakes.
This was stated by the Minister of Agriculture of Cyprus Kostas Cadiz. He also added that a team from the Agricultural University of Athens, specializing in preparing applications for the European Union, will soon arrive on the island to help prepare all the documents for marking. The final decision depends on the relevant authorities of the European Union.
Tassos Japanis, Secretary General of the Farmers' Union, said the organization welcomes this initiative. “This will help our country and our products,” he said.
