In the Kursk region, specialists from the territorial administration of the Rosselkhoznadzor conducted a large-scale study. Its purpose is to test the prevalence of the quarantine object, the golden potato nematode. Unfortunately, the results were disappointing. Nematoda was found on all 100% of the checked land plots.
- For the presence of golden potato nematode, 5139 household plots of citizens with a total area of 1939,442 hectares were checked, - the Rosselkhoznadzor explains. - As a result of laboratory tests, all submitted soil samples confirmed the presence of a quarantine object - golden potato nematode.
Nematodes are capable of damaging both terrestrial and underground plant organs. The nematode is most harmful where potatoes are planted year after year in one place. The bushes affected by the golden nematode turn yellow prematurely and almost do not produce tubers.
Fighting a nematode is quite difficult. For example, in early spring, before planting potatoes, urea is first applied to the infected area, then infusion of potato sprouts. Focusing on its smell, the larvae exit the cysts and die without finding food.
