Cyprus is experiencing an unprecedented drop in vegetable prices. This makes producers nervous about the post-Easter situation.
In their opinion, the cost of vegetables could decrease even more, given that restaurants are not operating at full capacity and hotels are closed due to restrictions related to the coronavirus.
"There is now an oversupply of basic agricultural products, and the purchasing power of consumers has dropped significantly due to the pandemic," said the farmers.
Consumers are spending less and less even on everyday grocery shopping, and coupled with the market's numbness, prices have dropped to really low levels.
In fact, many products are now available for less than 1 euro per kilogram. This means that even less money goes into the pockets of manufacturers.
In particular, tomatoes and cucumbers are sold at 80 cents per kilogram, potatoes at 40 cents, lettuce at 50 cents, and broccoli at 60 cents per kilogram.
