The Government of the Russian Federation has prepared a project for the creation of a national system for high-precision monitoring and utilization of climate-active gases, informs official website of the Government of the Russian Federation.
“We continue our comprehensive work to adapt the sectors of the economy to climate change. Over the past 20 years, the Russian Federation has ensured a reduction in carbon intensity at a faster pace than in the United States, China, and Europe. Today it is important not only to maintain this course, but also to prevent the impact of the climate crisis on the economy. In particular, to carry out work on the scientific study of the impact of climate change on agriculture, industry and housing and communal services, to continue measures aimed at combating desertification, preventing and eliminating natural emergencies. For this, more than 50 research and development by scientific organizations will be carried out. More than 8 billion rubles are allocated for the integrated monitoring project in the next three years as part of the Low-Carbon Development Policy strategic initiative,” said Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Victoria Abramchenko.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the climate agenda is politicized, foreign experts are often subjective and are guided by the data of unfriendly countries, so Russia needs to ensure information sovereignty in this matter. The national monitoring system should provide independent forecasts of the global climate and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as information on the causes of climate change, objective data on the absorption capacity of Russian ecosystems, and verified estimates of the economic efficiency of various decarbonization methods.
“This will increase the validity of the measures taken in the field of climate policy. Scientifically based data and monitoring of changes will become the basis for management decisions in the field of limiting greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change both in regions and individual entities,” Abramchenko noted.
