The Association of Enterprises for Advanced Grain Processing (Soyuzstarch), together with the federal magazine “Agrobusiness,” sums up the results of the third rating of companies in the advanced grain processing industry for 2022. The rating took into account data from 24 companies engaged in deep processing of plant raw materials: wheat, corn and potatoes. The companies are ranked according to two criteria - raw material processing capacity and profit for 2022.
The Russian industry of deep processing of agricultural raw materials is represented by 24 companies. The total grain processing capacity per day of all companies in the industry reaches 8669 tons per day. The total number of employees working in these companies is 5870 people, and the profit is 25 billion rubles. in 2022.
Processing capacity
In this rating, the processing capacity of an enterprise is considered to be the volume in tons of processed raw materials (wheat, corn, potatoes) per day.
The ranking in terms of processing capacity is led by Cargill LLC. It is followed by AMILCO LLC. The third line in the ranking was taken by JSC BioTech Rosva, and the fourth by CJSC Premix Plant No. 1. The top five is closed by Aston Starch Products LLC and Rustark LLC. The full list of companies is presented in Table 1.
Two companies increased their processing capacity in 2022: Rustark LLC and Krahmaloprodukt OJSC. Some companies occupy the same position in the ranking because they have the same raw material processing capacity. The last 2 lines of the rating are occupied by companies that do not process grain, but buy starch and modify it - Khimprom LLC and Arnika LLC. To produce their products, they use starch, which they buy from other manufacturers.

Chart 1 shows the comparative rating of “Enterprise Profit” for 2021-2022. Almost all businesses saw significant earnings growth in 2022 for several reasons. "Firstly, there was an increase in prices for starch products against the backdrop of the departure of many international players both from the country and in terms of import supplies. High sugar prices supported prices for glucose and glucose-fructose syrups. Secondly, enterprises diversified their portfolios (in favor of higher-margin products) in order to replace imported goods. Thirdly, factories increased capacity utilization for all types of products, producing more products compared to previous periods", explains Soyuzstarch President Oleg Radin.
Cargill LLC and Premix Plant No. 1 CJSC did not change their leadership positions in the “Enterprise Profit in 2022” rating. AMILCO LLC moved up one line in the ranking. OJSC Khobotovsk enterprise "Krahmaloprodukt" was on the fourth line of the rating - three positions higher than in 2021. Aston Starch Products LLC also ranks fifth in 2022, as in 2021. NewBio LLC rose 17 lines higher thanks to one of the government support measures, namely the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation dated February 12.02.2020, 137 No. 1,100, they received XNUMX billion rubles.
To fully provide information about the deep grain processing industry, a survey of companies was conducted in such areas as: “Innovation of the enterprise”, “Social responsibility of business”, “Company development prospects”, “Company’s contribution to the development of the deep grain processing industry”. 6 companies took part in the survey: LLC NewBio, LLC Rustark, JSC Premix Plant No. 1, LLC Cargill, LLC Amil, JSC Khobotovsky Enterprise Starch Product.
Innovativeness of the enterprise
The deep processing industry is modern and innovative. Most companies estimate the degree of automation of their production at 80% or more. 5 out of 6 surveyed companies have automated the following stages of work: acceptance of raw materials, processing of raw materials, warehousing of products, shipment of products.
The surveyed companies have starch yields above 69% and recovery rates of 95-98%.
In 2022, Western European countries were in first place among technology suppliers for production lines, with Russian technologies in second place. In third place in an equal share are technologies from Eastern Europe, the USA, China and the Middle East, including Turkey.
Business social responsibility
Within the framework of the “Social Responsibility of Business” criterion, it is possible to highlight the indicators of enterprises in terms of environmental friendliness and ethical approach to business, sustainable development (ESG) and social responsibility. All companies that took part in the survey have their own wastewater treatment plants and equipment for atmospheric air protection. All enterprises conduct periodic monitoring of their environmental impact. Companies recycle from 20% to 100% of the total waste internally.
It is worth noting that Russian companies take into account modern trends. Thus, 50% of enterprises take into account sustainable development standards (ESG) in their activities. 83% of companies surveyed took part in charitable or social events in 2022. Enterprises in the industry are certified according to ISO 9001, ISO 22000, ISO 14000, FSSC, Kosher, Halal.
The average employee salary in 2022 among the companies surveyed is 60 thousand rubles. All enterprises provide certain benefits to employees, for example, delivery to the enterprise, discounted meals, provision of work clothes, etc. Some companies will expand their staff.
Prospects for the development of the company
The status of “Company Development Prospects” took into account plans to launch new products and develop business until 2024 inclusive. 83% of companies plan to open new production lines and launch new products. For example, the rating participants noted that they plan to begin producing or increasing the production of modified starches for food and industrial use, resistant maltodextrins, liquid lysine concentrate (LLC) and liquid threonine, organic acids: citric and lactic acid, xanthan gum and other highly processed grain products.
For these purposes, all companies plan to purchase new equipment. They also invest in industry technology startups, for example, to develop technology for producing liquid threonine and producing new types of starch products.
The company's contribution to the development of the industry
80% of the companies are members of the industry Association of Advanced Grain Processing Enterprises: Cargill LLC, AMILCO LLC, ASTON Starch Products LLC, Premix Plant No. 1 CJSC, NewBio LLC, Khobotovsky Enterprise Starch Products JSC , Rustark LLC, AminoSib JSC, Chaplyginsky Starch Plant JSC, Kabardinsky Starch Plant LLC, Chuvashenkrakhmal LLC, Mglinsky Starch Plant LLC, SPPK Udacha, Amil LLC, LLC Albion", Khimprom LLC and Arnika LLC. Enterprises that are part of the Soyuzstarch Association produce from 75% to 100% of various types of products for deep grain processing. Through the association, companies interact with regulatory authorities and the industry community, including making proposals for legislation.
In 2022, companies exported up to 20% of all products they produced. All surveyed enterprises plan to increase product exports. 83% of companies produce or plan to produce products aimed at import substitution, for example, liquid lysine, liquid threonine, modified starch, organic acids: citric and lactic, xanthan gum.
Companies are active in scientific and educational activities—five out of six surveyed enterprises have employees with scientific degrees. In addition, company specialists participated as speakers at industry events and were authors of articles in the media. Half of the companies have intellectual property - patents, inventions, models, etc.
«We have made it a rule to form a rating of companies in the grain processing industry annually in order to note the main industry changes. In general, we see positive dynamics. However, we still have practically not mastered the block of microbiological synthesis products and we also do not produce a number of plant proteins. Although projects have been announced and existing enterprises do not stand still, constantly expanding their product line. In addition, government support mechanisms are now sufficient to invest in the industry. For example, the possibility of concluding agreements on the protection and promotion of investment in relation to investment projects has been renewed. The only question is the volume of such financing. Let's see what the results will be next year“, commented Oleg Radin, President of the Association of Advanced Grain Processing Enterprises.
Ranking methodology
The methodology for rating companies is based on an assessment of the following criteria: processing capacity of agricultural raw materials and company profits for 2022. The information from the Federal Tax Service of Russia presented on the List-Org portal was taken as the basis for assessing profits. Data on processing capacity was provided by the company.
For a comprehensive assessment of the work of enterprises, a survey of companies was conducted, reflecting the following parameters: "Innovativeness of the enterprise", "Social responsibility of business", "Prospects for the development of the company", "The company's contribution to the development of the industry of deep grain processing".
