In 2017, Ukraine sent 17,6 thousand tons of potatoes in physical weight to foreign markets, which amounted to $ 3,4 million in dollar terms, the State Fiscal Service reports.
Compared to the volume of 2016 (5 thousand tons in physical weight), this is 3,5 times higher, and in monetary terms, the volume of potato exports increased 2,6 times ($ 1,3 million in 2016).
The products were willingly bought by Azerbaijan (7%), Moldova (15%) and Belarus (75%). The export structure for these countries is as follows: Azerbaijan - 1,24 thousand tons for $ 242 thousand, Moldova - 2,61 thousand tons for $ 511 thousand, Belarus - 13,27 thousand tons for $ 2,59 million.
In 2017, the gross harvest of potatoes amounted to 21,9 million tons, which is 0,5% higher than a year earlier. More than 98% of the crop was grown by households.
Potato imports to Ukraine decreased 2,6 times in physical terms and 48,6% in monetary terms. For the whole last year, Ukraine bought 9,86 thousand tons of potatoes for $ 2 million. Import structure: Egypt (10,14%), Germany (29,4%), the Netherlands (42%).
The country for the production of potatoes ranks fourth in the world. Ukraine is ahead of China, India and the Russian Federation. Despite its reputation as a "potato country", Belarus ranks only tenth in the cultivation of these products.
